The connection manifest: a map of the dataset

A manifest helps another evaluator navigate a delivery without guessing how records relate. Keep it specific to one dataset version.

Describe the package

List sources, file formats, date coverage, schemas, field meanings, units, encoding and known omissions. Include stable version identifiers and checksums where appropriate. Explain whether timestamps are original, normalized or transformed.

Describe relationships

Document join keys, relationship types and cardinality. Mark inferred links and explain their validation method. List how pseudonymous identities are represented without disclosing a re-identification key.

Document transformations

Explain deduplication, filtering, redaction and derived labels. Link quality findings to the exact release and reviewed scope. A manifest is most useful when a recipient can reproduce a check and see why a missing record is missing.

Practical guidance, not legal advice or a buyer specification. Examples are illustrative. Reviewed October 20, 2026.
